A Kaleidoscope of Hope: Celebrating Olivia’s Journey Home
At Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville, every home tells a story. Some stories unfold through months of hard work, perseverance and partnership. Others are impossible to tell without also talking about the joy that carried them along the way.
During the dedication ceremony for Olivia’s new home in Dickson County, Michael Williams, Habitat’s county volunteer engagement & construction specialist, reflected on Olivia’s journey to homeownership and the many people who helped make it possible.
He began with a single word:
Kaleidoscope.
A kaleidoscope is filled with tiny pieces of colored glass that, by themselves, don’t seem to make much sense. But when you hold it up to the light and give it a turn, those individual pieces come together to create something beautiful.
“That’s what this home reminds me of,” Michael said.
From One Build Site to Another
Michael first met Olivia on a Habitat build in Cheatham County. She arrived with what he remembers as “the biggest smile in the world” and immediately got to work helping another family build their dream home.
“I remember thinking, ‘Holy smokes … is she excited,'” Michael recalled.
After introducing himself, he quickly realized Olivia was one of those people who felt familiar from the start.
Then it hit him why she was so excited.
As Olivia watched another family’s home take shape, she knew it wouldn’t be long before she would be standing on her own build site, watching her own dream become reality.
Over the following months, Michael had the privilege of working alongside Olivia and watching that dream come to life.
“I can honestly say I’ve never met a future homeowner more excited about moving into a house,” he said. “Or, as Olivia would probably call it, her mansion on the hill.”
Even when she wasn’t volunteering or working on her required sweat-equity hours, Olivia found herself visiting the build site.
She would stop by to admire the progress, smile at the changes and imagine what life would look like once her family moved in.
“Like every five minutes,” Michael joked.
The Charlie Brown Comparison
To describe Olivia’s excitement, Michael turned to a familiar holiday classic.
He recalled the scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas where Sally follows Linus everywhere with admiration in her eyes and little red hearts seem to float above her head.
“That was Olivia every time she came to visit this house,” Michael said. “You’d nearly bump your head into the little red hearts dancing over hers.”
Whenever she visited, she stood looking at her home with twinkling eyes and an unmistakable smile.
“If there had been a thought bubble over her head, it would’ve listed every single thing she planned to decorate after moving in,” Michael said. “I’m gonna do this, and this, and this!”
More Than Walls and Windows
As Olivia prepares to close on her home in August [2026], Michael hopes she sees more than lumber, paint, walls and windows when she looks around.
He hopes she sees the love that helped build those walls.
He hopes she sees the safety the home will provide for her daughters.
He hopes she sees the laughter that will fill the rooms and the memories that are waiting to be made.
Like a kaleidoscope turned toward the light, dozens of people helped make this moment possible. Volunteers, donors, sponsors, friends, family members and Olivia herself each brought a different piece to the story.
By themselves, they were just pieces.
Together, they created something beautiful.
As Michael concluded his remarks:
“Olivia, may this home be filled with love, laughter, peace and every color of happiness. Welcome home.”
